What You Are Seeing
Mequon sits about 14 miles north of our West Allis shop
Which means a tech loading a truck for your call is already accounting for the drive before they ever see the door. That distance doesn't change what's wrong with your door, but it does change how we plan the visit - we bring extra rollers, cable, and track hardware on a Mequon run because there's no quick trip back to the shop if something's missing.
- 14 miles
An off-track door usually shows the same signs wherever it sits
The door hangs crooked in the opening, one bottom corner sits lower than the other, or a roller has popped clean out of the track and is dangling by the hinge. On houses built around Mequon's median year of 1982, the tracks themselves are often the original galvanized steel, bent slightly from decades of use before they finally let a roller jump. Don't keep hitting the opener button when you see this - that's how a bent track turns into a torn opener bracket too.
The DIY Question
Mequon's median household income runs well above the regional average, and that shows up in the garages we see here - more double-wide doors, heavier insulated panels, and in some cases two-car openers running on the same worn track hardware since the house was built. A heavier door off its track carries more stored tension than a lightweight single door, and that tension is exactly what makes this a bad DIY job.
If the door is only slightly off track and still closed, it's reasonable to leave it alone and call rather than force it. If a cable has come off the drum along with the roller, or the door is open and leaning, that's a two-person, right-tool job - trying to walk it back into the track by hand risks the cable whipping loose or the section cracking. We'd rather talk you through making the garage safe to leave overnight than have you attempt a track reset solo.
What Can Go Wrong
Winters here put real stress on track alignment. Cold, severe winters mean steel track brackets contract and the lubricant in the rollers stiffens, so a track that was already a degree or two out of plumb is more likely to let a roller jump in January than in July. On a house from the early 1980s, that bracket hardware has usually never been replaced, just re-tightened.
The most common failure we find in Mequon is a loose track bracket at the top bend, where the horizontal track meets the vertical - it works loose over the years, the track flexes under load, and a roller eventually rides up and out. Less common but more serious: a door that's been off track long enough that the bottom panel has bent against the jamb. That one isn't always a track fix - sometimes the panel itself needs replacing, and we'll tell you straight if that's the case rather than bolt a bent door back into a track.
Getting It Booked In
We run the service out of West Allis and come out to Mequon for off-track calls
So when you reach out, be ready to describe what you're seeing - which side of the door is affected, whether a cable is visibly off the drum, and whether the door is currently open or closed. That tells the tech what to load before the 14-mile drive instead of after.
If your door is closed and just hanging crooked
Leave the opener alone and don't try to drive the car over it. If it's open and sagging, prop it only if you can do so without reaching under the track, and keep the opener unplugged. You can see what else we cover for this area on our Mequon service page, and general off-track repair details are on our West Allis off-track page.
